Our Founder's Mission
I'm an optometrist, and I'm a mom of two. Those two things don't always agree.
Sometimes you hand your kid a tablet because dinner has to get made, a work call can't wait, or you just need ten quiet minutes to be a person again. That isn't a parenting failure. It's real life, and every parent I know lives it.
I also know the other side of it. In my exam room, I keep seeing the same thing: more and more kids coming in with eye strain, headaches, and early signs of nearsightedness. Parents asked me whether blue light glasses were the fix. They help with sleep, but they don't touch the real issue: constant up-close focus that is overwhelming for growing eyes.
That's why I started TechSpecs. Not to encourage more screen time, but to be there for the screen time that's already part of their day. It's a simple daily wellness tool for the screen-filled world they're growing up in. Screens aren't going anywhere, so TechSpecs is how we help their eyes keep up. At what age can my child start wearing TechSpecs?
TechSpecs are designed for kids who spend meaningful time focusing up close, typically ages 5 and up. That includes screens like tablets, laptops, and phones, but it also covers homework, drawing, reading, or anything else they’re doing up close.
Younger kids with high screen use can absolutely benefit too. Research links each additional hour of daily screen time to 42% higher odds of nearsightedness in kids ages 2 to 7.
If you have specific vision questions about your child, it’s worth checking with your pediatric optometrist about whether TechSpecs are a good fit.
My kid already wears prescription glasses. Can they wear TechSpecs?
If your child wears prescription glasses, talk to their eye doctor about a prescription version of TechSpecs' near-work technology. The kids line of TechSpecs is designed primarily for kids who don't currently wear prescription glasses but still spend a lot of time on screens.
How long should my kid wear them?
Only during near work, like screens, reading, homework, gaming, and crafting. They don't need them for playing outside, sports, or watching TV from across the room. That's part of what makes TechSpecs so easy to build into a routine. When it's time to get up and play, they just leave them at the desk and go! No all-day wear, just a little support when they're focusing up close. Keep one at home and one at school!
Will my kid actually wear them?
It’s the question we hear most, even though parents are almost always surprised by how much their kids love them! TechSpecs feels like their own trendy, grown-up accessory, not a medical device. They’re lightweight, durable, and the kind of thing kids actually want to wear. When a child gets to pick their own pair, it becomes theirs, and that’s usually what turns “will they wear them?” into “where are my glasses?” In one of our classroom trials, we watched kids get up and grab their glasses on their own when it was time to focus. What makes TechSpecs different from blue light glasses for kids?
Blue-light glasses primarily filter blue light, which can help with sleep. Blue light tells the brain it’s still daytime and holds back melatonin, the hormone that makes us sleepy, so wearing them for a few hours before bed can help kids wind down at night. That’s a real benefit, but it’s a sleep benefit. It has very little to do with digital eye strain.
Digital eye strain doesn’t always look the way you’d expect. Some kids get tired eyes, headaches, or blurry vision. Others just run out of steam sooner, get fidgety, or can’t sit with homework as long, and often they can’t tell you why. Underneath all of it is the same thing, a muscle effort most people never notice. Looking at something up close asks two different sets of eye muscles to work at once: one set flexes to keep the screen in focus, and another turns both eyes inward so they aim at the same spot. During a long homework session or a full day of laptops and tablets, those muscles have to hold that effort for hours, and that is what wears growing eyes down.

How will I know they’re working?
Some kids will notice, some won’t, and a lot of them aren’t really aware of the symptoms in the first place.
